Spencer Doran - Puzzles (2006)

Press Release:

I found out about this young californian producer while trying to identify the first hidden song on the last track (titled "Momentary outro") of Sadat X's Black October album. It's a remix of the originally DJ Spinna-produced cut "God is back". So today I don't know why I made some effort and decided to find out more infos about this cat and couldn't even find a myspace page. I just found some infos mainly on japanese websites about what he released so far on the Female Fun label I think. For some reason all he did was only distributed in Japan. That sucks doesn't it ? Thanks to the power of the internet and social networking I was able to find his first album Puzzles and I'm just finishing to listen to it. It's a very good instrumental Hip Hop album filled with dope breaks and samples with an ounce of experimentation. Fans of cats like Shin-Ski, Fat Jon or Lark Chillout will surely love it. If anybody was able to put his/her hands on this 12'' get at me.

Bob(s) Thoughts:
The Japanese recordings are not on Female Fun, they're on Easel, a Japan-only label. You're right, it's a shame he hasn't found American distro for the Easel recordings.

Spencer resisted MySpace for a long time, but finally set one up a couple of months ago:

He's currently living in Portland, Ore. and plays there under the name Cloaks -- you can hear some new music he's working on on MySpace -- he also DJs at a couple of clubs there.

He's done some different - less hip-hop-ish - recordings in a project called RV Paintings with some of the Starving Weirdos:

BTW, I keep close track of what he's up to because he's my son.

Thought I'd drop in here with a Spencer/Cloaks update. Spencer and Ryan (Cloaks is currently a duo) flew down from Portland to SF on Friday to play a gig at Grace Cathedral called EpicoDisco http://episcodisco.com/

Spencer has also joined another Portland band called Operative - they were one of the top ten "best new bands" chosen by readers of Willamette Week, Portland's alt. weekly.

Word of Advice

We don't upload any of the links in this blog because, their are too many floating around anyway, and it's a waste of time. Some do it for points, while some do it for money. Well we don't do it that way here, as long as we can share and let you know what's cracking with those albums we're happy. These guys don't get a lot of exposure, and for damn sure some of them will never graze the mainstream air wave. By the way not sure if anyone actually read this stuff, but if you made it this far, The Beat Dangler thanks you.
